Dr. Marc Ruel is the Head and Chair of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Canada. He received his MD from the University of Ottawa and his cardiac surgery certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He pursued research in angiogenesis and minimally invasive cardiac surgery at Harvard University, where he also completed a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on quantitative methods.
Dr. Ruel is a Professor in the Department of Surgery (primary affiliation) and in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (cross-appointed affiliation) at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Ruel is credited worldwide with several clinical and translational research contributions, including the development of minimally invasive multivessel coronary artery bypass surgery, as well as with furthering other cardiac surgery techniques. Dr. Ruel has published more than 400 scientific papers and book chapters, is the recipient of numerous academic and community awards, and has been featured among the 'Giants of Cardiothoracic Surgery’.
With multiple sources of continuous national funding, Dr. Ruel founded in 2003 the www.beatsresearch.com laboratory research program, leading to high-profile recruitments. Many science students have since joined the program, often achieving translational impact and evolving to Faculty positions.
Dr. Ruel is the President of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS), one of the most highly respected medical societies in the world. Since the CCS was established in 1947, only 3 other surgeons have held this role. Dr. Ruel also serves as Surgery Editor for the journal Circulation, and is the Canadian Director for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
