Dr. Sara Pereira joined the Division of Cardiothoracic surgery at University of Utah as Professor of Surgery in December 2020. She is a Northern California native. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992 and completed medical school at University of California Irvine School of Medicine in 1997. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 2002 and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005. She continued as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Alabama until 2007, and subsequently practiced in Western Colorado at St. Mary’s Medical Center for ten years. Dr. Pereira returned to the UAB Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2017 and was very active in resident education and the structural valve program at UAB. She specializes in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery and particularly enjoys complex re-operative surgery, aortic surgery and minimally invasive valve surgery. She is passionate about student and resident education and directed the cardiac simulation program and summer research program for under-represented high school students at UAB. In addition to her active roles in the medical student admissions committee and general surgery and cardiac surgery residency programs, she has served as the Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Surgery at UAB. She looks forward to directing the integrated thoracic surgery residency program at the University of Utah, as well as promoting the adult cardiac surgery section within the division of cardiothoracic surgery. Her research interests include quality improvement and clinical outcomes in adult cardiac surgery, particularly valve in valve trans-catheter aortic valve replacement, perioperative optimization of high risk cardiac patients, and infection prevention.
