Dr. Carpenter earned her Ph.D. in Physiology from Penn State University in 1981 and her medical degree from George Washington University in 1989. She is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. She served 14 years in the US Air Force and was the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center until joining UT Health San Antonio faculty in 2002. Dr. Carpenter is an adult cardiac surgeon with particular interests in aortic root and arch reconstruction, valvular heart disease including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), and advances in technology for the future of thoracic surgery. Her greatest passion is surgical education and she is currently the program director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program. Dr. Carpenter is the current President Elect of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association. She has served on the ACGME Thoracic Surgery Milestones committee, is a section editor for the national Thoracic Surgery Curriculum and is committed to the development of competency based medical education.
