Leonard Y. Lee, M.D. was initially recruited to Robert Wood Johnson Medical School as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2012, after serving on the faculty of Cornell for 10 years and Hackensack University Hospital for one year. Since that time, he has been promoted to Chair of Surgery and received the James W. Mackenzie, M.D. Endowed Chair in Surgery. Despite growing administrative demands, he has been able to maintain productivity in terms of education, research, and clinical responsibilities. Research efforts, both clinical and basic, have resulted in over 250 published articles and abstracts as well as a recent NIH-RO1 grant submission in collaboration with Dr. Shaohua Li as well as ADA, AHA grants currently in preparation. Dr. Lee’s clinical research interests lie primarily within valvular heart disease and basic science interest lies in the utilization of stem cells for myocardial repair as well as triggers for the development of “metabolic syndrome”. He serves on reviewer panels for such journals as Journal of Surgical Research, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery to name a few. As a mentor and educator, he has received consistent high reviews from students and residents alike. Finally, Dr. Lee remains one of the most productive clinicians in the school and hospital, personally performing in excess of 350 heart surgeries per year, generating 18,000 wRVU, with patients seeking his expertise from all over the northeast.
