Scott Silvestry, MD, is the Surgical Director of Thoracic Transplant programs at AdventHealth Transplant Institute and the Co-Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Institute. Prior to joining AdventHealth (formerly Florida Hospital) in March of 2015, he held various positions at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine, including associate professor and the surgical director of the cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist division of cardiothoracic surgery. Under his leadership, Washington University School of Medicine’s LVAD and transplant programs rapidly became one of the nation’s busiest.
Dr. Silvestry has authored and coauthored groundbreaking research and served in leadership roles at organizations within his field. He has also lectured nationally and internationally and is recognized as an international innovator of surgical technique and applications of mechanical assist technology.
Originally from New York City, Dr. Silvestry completed undergraduate studies at Cornell University, and attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed a residency, fellowship, and advanced fellowship in cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist devices at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Silvestry has held many academic positions including clinical instructor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, assistant professor and then associate professor of surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, and surgical director of the surgical cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. For nearly a decade, Dr. Silvestry served as consulting surgeon for Asheville Veterans Medical Center. Dr. Silvestry is an active member of the United Network for Organ Sharing, where he has held various leadership positions. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.
