Pr Yves d’Udekem, MD PhD, is the chief of cardiac surgery in the Children’s National Medical Centre, Washington DC. Educated from Belgian parents, Yves graduated from Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. He graduated as a surgeon in 1993 and then followed a training in cardiac surgery. He trained in Belgium and internationally in South Africa, Canada and the UK. He began working at The Royal Children’s Hospital in 2003 and took the chief position in Washington DC in September 2020.
His areas of expertise are valve repair, mechanical circulatory support and all surgery for single ventricle conditions, in particular the Norwood procedure. He is seen as a leader in the field of pediatric aortic valve disease. He trained over the years numerous successful cardiac surgeons of our specialty.
He had an ascending career in clinical research which focussed on tetralogy of Fallot, pulmonary atresia, VSD and MAPCAs, aortic arch surgery and aortic valve repair. Currently, his main focus is the long-term outcomes of patients with single ventricle conditions. He created the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry, the world’s largest database of patients with a Fontan circulation. He has published more than 350 publications and raised over 7 M of grant funding.
